Although this 2020 is been a year we can definitely consider crippled in sporting terms for every sport and nation, the show that World Padel Tour put together a few years back when it evolved from Padel Pro Tour to what it is now (and certainly a teenager yet…) has continued against all odds and ending in one of a kind worldwide landscapes : Menorca.
The World Padel Tour Commitee has thrown tremendous efforts throughout the year to make it look like it was only a mild flu compared to how hard the pandemic has hit all kind of activities everywhere, doesn’t matter where you turn and look, there´s been uncertainty and chaos driving us all to an adaptation process of survival. And because of the way and speed how these guys have accommodated perfectly all the health & safety measures to make as many tournaments happening as possible, the few played have attracted more viewers than probably a regular, non-pandemic year.
As the year draws to a close end, we´ve seen younger players battling away their spot in main draws, fighting every ball and not giving away even an inch of a doubt like the team formed by Javi Rico and Coki Nieto, Agustín Tapia (ending the season in the better possible way: winning the Menorca Master Final by the hand of the greatest and longest standing top padel player Fernando Belasteguín); Fede Chingotto and Juan Tello losing to Maxi Sánchez and a hugely cramped Martin Di Nenno who had very little words lying there on the the carpet while being interwied.
During these final days of 2020, the names of new teams for the new year have been disclosed bringing along the excitement of gambling away wild guesses towards best 2 WPT players, Top 10 teams and names, MVP´s, new contracts and sponsorships but above all the hope of being able to start an undisrruptive year of pure padel show.
Slowly but steadily, public has been coming back to their seats embracing the idea of a new normal, but many tournament-goers have seen their tickets taken away, reduced their opportunities of accessing even the chance of a purchase…but after all, everybody has to acknowledge the true fact of the WPT organization taking care, as best as they could following the main safety guidelines, of our beloved Padel. And to that, I say: Thank you so very much!
